EVERYTHINGSDUMBAND EVERYTHINGSDUMBAND
The solo exhibition EVERYTHINGSDUMBAND is named after my most consequential work, that I created during my senior year of undergrad at MassArt. This work is a commentary of my own intrusive thoughts. These self portraits are commentaries on other aspects of my personal life, such as mental health struggles, over-sexualization and being a targeted member of society as a black queer woman. Creating self portraits as a black, queer woman is inherently political. Black women in society are ostracized, over sexualized and their femininity is stripped from them. It is important for me to create work that I believe to be beautiful, feminine, ornate allowing other black women to see themselves in the art world and in my work.
For the exhibition, I would like viewers to not only engage with my personal works, but also create their own work.
